Image Credit: DEVELOP Fort Collins Team. This project is a continuation of the summer DEVELOP team’s work, seeking to create an accurate, fine-resolution forest cover classification model of Fraser Experimental Forest before the mountain pine beetle (MPB) epidemic. Using an expanded time-series of Landsat 5 TM imagery, in addition to new ancillary data sets and field validation data, the team created a forest cover classification model with at least 80 percent accuracy. This will act as an important decision support tool for U.S. Forest Service partners in addressing post-beetle outbreak issues including mitigation, fuel loading, wildlife habitat and watershed hydrology.
