Abstract: The Highly-portable Immersive Virtual Environment (HIVE) uses stereographic shutter glasses to create a 3-D environment to display various models of complex information. The design allows for easy disassembly and transportation to bring its visualizations wherever they are needed. The primary focus of the Summer 2012 term was to continue improving the HIVE’s user-friendly experience. Upgrades were made to the HIVE’s current implementation of the Microsoft Kinect Software Development Kit to allow for smoother and easier motion gestures and enhanced speech recognition in various languages. The team also constructed the HIVE-Ocular Radiant Blackout Inclusive Tent (ORBiT), a tent enclosure which will be used to present the HIVE at a greater range of venues despite lighting restrictions. New visualizations were created to be displayed on the HIVE, including models of the Suomi NPP and Aquarius satellites.
