The winning project, “Sound the Alarm: Oregon Wildfires Take a Toll on Public Health” was a collaborative effort between six students at Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia.
The Oregon Wildfires project team used NASA Earth observing satellites to analyze aerosol trajectories and evaluate the impact to nearby communities, as well as develop wildfire risk maps and monitor burn scars.
“The Oregon team produced a great video that creatively described their research and methodologies and led to a spirited discussion regarding their project,” said Lindsay Rogers, assistant program manager for NASA’s DEVELOP National Program.
Each member on the winning team will receive a 1-year edition of ArcGIS software furnished by competition sponsor Esri, a California company that creates GIS software.
Runner-up honors go to two teams who followed closely behind the Oregon team in scoring, based on Earth observations, overall product, discussion, creativity, and decision support:
• “Developing a Climate Change Vulnerability Index for Nepal Using NASA EOS Data” (Marshall Space Flight Center and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development)
• “VIIRS Detection of Nightlights and Greenhouse Gases from Natural-Gas Flaring” (Stennis Space Center).
“All the videos are really amazing; a good amount of effort and work has been done,” said one of five VPS judges, Dr. Kannappan Ramu, a research associate and faculty member at the University of Oklahoma.
Added Lauren Childs-Gleason, DEVELOP’s national science lead, “These projects unite NASA’s Earth observations with local communities by addressing environmental issues and improving decision-making processes. All of the teams did a great job describing their work and why it matters.”
