Call for Papers: Ocean Plastic and Marine Debris
January 1, 2020
2020 Special Themed Issue
OES Earthzine, an online scientific publication, is soliciting articles of 800 to 3,000 words for its 2020 theme on the use of Earth observation data to monitor and quantify waterborne plastic and marine debris and new technology to clean plastic from our waterways and oceans.
2020 Special Themed Issue : Accepting until further notice
OES Earthzine is soliciting articles of 800-3,000 words for its 2020 theme on ocean plastic and marine debris monitoring, quantification and cleanup. Researchers estimate that 8 million tons of plastic debris ends up in the oceans every year, and this amount is predicted to increase by an order in magnitude in the next 10 yrs. We are seeking contributions that focus on the use of Earth observation data to monitor and quantify waterborne plastics and new technology being used to remove plastic from our waterways and oceans.
The theme issue is scheduled for first quarter of 2020. We seek to publish articles from all regions of the globe.
Specific topics of interest for our theme on waterborne plastic debris include:
- Large scale ocean cleanup initiatives
- New technology in the prevention and collection of plastic that ends up in waterways
- Remote or automated quantification and monitoring of waterborne plastic
- Newly discovered organisms and ecosystems utilizing plastic
Earthzine is dedicated to promoting the societal benefits of Earth observation and the use of Earth information in planning and policy.
Earthzine operates under the auspices of the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society (OES) and supports the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) and its mission to integrate the world’s Earth observing systems into a Global Earth Observing System of Systems (GEOSS).
We invite you to submit an article and become part of a growing professionally diverse community and global readership network working to build the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS).
Earthzine seeks to explore the application of scientific and technological research as well as policy and its implementation for the benefit of society.
We welcome articles about programs, projects, organizations, examples of interdisciplinary and cross-regional research, latest discoveries, and unusual findings. We also publish opinion essays, and book and art reviews.
Important dates: Submissions for the ocean plastic and marine debris theme will be accepted until further notice. Submit inquiries and articles to our Earthzine editors at earthzineeditor@ieee.org .
Publication: Submissions must be in English. All accepted contributions will undergo review by subject-matter experts, be published online at earthzine.org, and be freely accessible to the public. Earthzine does not charge IEEE OES member authors for publishing. Publication fees for non-OES members will be $25 per submission, plus $25 for one round of editing and publication, and additional fees in cases where extensive editing is needed.
