As far as astronomers can tell, the Milky Way galaxy looks like an enormous, pinwheel-shaped collection of at least a hundred billion stars, laced with gas and dust, that is about a hundred thousand light years in diameter and rotates once every two hundred and fifty million years. It didn’t always look like this, though.
