Figure showing Environmental and anthropomorphic issues to consider in evaluating system sustainability.

Figure showing ASTER band combination comprising R:14/12; G:13/14; B:12/13; imagery acquired Jan. 21, 2010. Image Source: NASA and METI.Sustainable access to safe drinking water is a public health issue directly linked to the economy in Haiti and around the world. This research applies remote-sensing techniques to data from ASTER satellite imagery to produce maps useful for placing community-level water-filtration installation systems in Port au Prince and surrounding areas.

Mapping Aquatic Vegetation on Lake Victoria

EarthzineDEVELOP Virtual Poster Session, In-Depth, Original

Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) imagery depicting Lake Victoria normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) extraction before (left) and after (right). The left shows an unprocessed satellite image, while the NDVI image is shown on the right, depicting aquatic vegetation in green. Bright green areas indicate dense aquatic vegetation. Source: USGS.Invasive aquatic vegetation has been a serious issue in Lake Victoria over the past decade, hindering transportation as well as a profitable fishing industry. Remote sensing was used to map the spatial extent of aquatic vegetation on the surface of Lake Victoria as well as create time series animations to show growth and movement of the vegetation. Our results will be used by SERVIR and the Lake Victoria Fisheries Organization to conduct operational satellite-based surveillance and to protect local fisheries.

H. Taubenböck and T. EschGerman Remote Sensing Data Center (DFD), German Aerospace Center (DLR), 82234 Wessling-Oberpfaffenhofen, Germanyhannes.taubenboeck@dlr.de Abstract — Urban monitoring implies multi-temporal observation and measurement of transformations or consistencies within cities. The urban context is highly complex, as cities consist of a large number of people living in close proximity and conditions of relative density and diversity in dynamically … Read More

Figure showing Air temperature (Ta) for the Hong Kong Observatory (urban) and Ta Kwu Ling (rural) climate stations for the 48 hours surrounding the image time.

Figure showing Air temperature image of the Kowloon Peninsula with street network. How accurate are thermal satellite images compared to on-the-ground field measurements when it comes to assessing the urban heat island (UHI) effect in Hong Kong? This research suggests that thermal images can be useful on hot summer nights to evaluate the magnitude and distribution of Hong Kong’s UHI.

Figure showing comparison of QuickBird, WorldView-1, and WorldView-2 spectral bands.

Cropped satellite image of BeijingA commercial satellite called WorldView-2 is the latest from DigitalGlobe. It includes new spectral bands to support vegetation and coastal analysis. This provides the potential for more robust modeling and discrimination of spectral signatures, resulting in more accurate feature extraction and land cover classification.
